The need for regular servicing

I often get asked ” how often do we need our boiler servicing” I reply  ”every year according to the gas regs”. The most interesting reply is along the lines of oh it’s a newer one so should be ok for a few years. Now try telling that to the two recent Glowworm condensing boilers I’ve seen that haven’t been looked at for over 5 years, both have older burner seals in that have perished and the heat from burnerleaking has melted a lot of internal parts, on occasion the boilers have needed replacements. Gas Flue Analyser and What The Readings Mean

So By now we all have our CPA1 qualification and are all experts in how to analyse exhaust gasses from gas appliances? NO I hear some of you thinking!

A lot of people I have spoken too since the new regulations have been enforced know how to test flue gasses using there gas flue analyser but don’t have a clue what the readings mean! To me it is far more important to understand what the readings mean as this is critical to identifying problems with appliances.

The CPA1 qualification is a bit of a joke really as they mearly teach you how to use the a machine, the qualification and assessment should focus more on the results of the test as without it, it wont improve safety (in my opinion) [Read more...]

Refurbished or New Printed Circuit Boards

In the current economic climate now more than ever, the customer is looking for even cheaper repairs. How we deal with this can be achieved in several ways, more so recently the issue was raised with refurbished printed circuit boards (PCB’s).

Love them or loath them, they exist, more so however is whether they should is a different matter all together. In my experience I have been using refurbished units for over 4 years with no issues. Now this could be constituted to either luck or just a good supplier.
So lets take a deeper look at what is the meaning of “Refurbished” and discuss the options of Refurbished or New Printed Circuit Boards.

Gas Safe – Put Your Home in Safe Hands

Something I have never understood as I stand behind the counter of my shop are the types of people coming in to ask advise regarding stripping a boiler.  I have countless stories of owners or Handy Men trying to fix their own boiler as I quote…” it’s an easy job and they are quite handy”….  The last handy man (Jack of all trades) that visited our shop came in with a well burnt out set of burner gaskets.  Firstly if a burner gasket is burnt out there must be something wrong with the burner in the first place.  The customer was adamant that there was nothing wrong with it and has been fine for the last 25 years or so and came up with this..
